This outdoor skate park is located at 1351 Jim Hamilton Blvd. next to Owens Field Airport in downtown Columbia. The 15,000 square-foot park features a street plaza, stairs, metal plated rails, and “pool” bowls ranging in depth from 4-to-12 feet.

Pads are required. The skate park is free and open to skateboards, in-line skates and bicycles.
The Owens field park has restrooms and a canteen area. A variety of outdoor sports take place at the park, which includes an 18-hole disc golf course, 12 regulation size soccer fields for all ages, and 3 T- Ball fields for youth play. Other sports that take place at the park consist of rugby, Pop Warner Football, Cross Country Track and Ultimate Frisbee League.

Brittlebank Park, a 10-acre park on the edge of the Ashley River, is popular with families, fishermen, and attendees of concerts and festivals. The park features trails, paved pathways, a playground, benches, picnic tables, and a fishing pier with a boat dock. The park also has a long narrow stretch of marshlands, which is home to birds and hundreds of native wildflower and plant species. An off-leash area for dogs is available at the north end of the park. The park is open from sunrise to sunset and free parking is available.

Hampton Park is one of the City of Charleston’s largest parks. It boasts the most extensive floral displays of any park in the city. An old rose collection and seasonal displays are planted by the staff and volunteers caring for the park. This neighborhood park has a rich history recently documented through a project of the Charleston Horticultural Society, an audio walking tour called Layers of the Landscape.

This park is home to many activities year round. Weddings, family reunions and many Frisbee games are but a few of the diverse activities seen in this park. The physical fitness trail is a popular spot for The Citadel students who live next door to the park. The park is an arboretum of sorts with many interesting species of trees and shrubs that grow in the Lowcountry. It is one of the few City of Charleston parks with restrooms and on-site parking.

Gadsdenboro Park

Gadsdenboro Park is located on Concord Street across from the Charleston Maritime Center and near the South Carolina Aquarium. Formerly called Concord Park, this is a vast public green space with sports fields and a host of amenities, including a walking path, nautical-themed playground, game tables, a bocce court and public restrooms.

Riverfront Park opened in 1983 for recreational usage of the land where the original waterworks for the City of Columbia was situated. This was also the site of the world’s first electrically operated textile mill, and the hydroelectric plant, the oldest one in the state, is still operating. 140 acres make up Riverfront Park.
The park, which separates the Historic Columbia Canal and the Congaree River, is approximately 167 acres and is just west of Huger Street. A popular jogging/walking trail runs two and one half miles along the linear park and offers wonderful views of the river. There is also a beautiful brick amphitheater as well as a self-guided walkway by the old parts of the water plant. The park has the capability of hosting smaller concerts.

Riverfront Park also includes an outdoor gym which features seven pieces of equipment including a Lat pull down and vertical press, a rower, a 2-person wheelchair accessible chest press, a 4-person leg press, an elliptical cross trainer, 4-person pendulum and 3-person static combo.

In 2015, the South Carolina Memorial Park Commission unveiled a bronze War Dogs Monument at Memorial Park. The monument is a representation of a Vietnam infantryman and his loyal canine companion. The kneeling solider is about seven feet tall and weighs 1,400 pounds. The statue of the dog is four feet tall and weighs 300 pounds.

Opened in time for the 1997 season, Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park remains one of the premier atmospheres in Minor League Baseball. Named after the city’s longest-serving mayor, “The Joe” is the home of the RiverDogs and The Citadel baseball team.

The facility is named after the long-time former mayor of Charleston, Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Mayor Riley, an avid baseball fan. He is one of the city’s great promoters of the game of baseball, and despite his objections, city council voted unanimously to name the facility in his honor.

The facility is unique in several ways. Its uniqueness stems from the relationships fostered by the City of Charleston, the state of South Carolina (The Citadel) and a private enterprise (RiverDogs).

Riley Park was designed by Populous of Kansas City, MO., known primarily for their work at Oriole Park at Camden Yards (Baltimore), Jacobs Field (Cleveland) and Coors Field (Denver), among many others.

With the addition of the Riley Park Club–now known as the Segra Club– in 2017, the ballpark got its first major addition since the stadium was built.

Marion Square

Previously known as the Citadel Green, Marion Square is a 10 acre rectangular plot of land that was conveyed to the colony of South Carolina in 1758. The Old Citadel, or South Carolina State Arsenal, currently sits on the north side of the square where a group of buildings known as the Tobacco Inspection once stood. These buildings were erected by the State in 1790 for the storage and inspection of tobacco prior to its shipment. The grounds of the Square served as a muster ground for the State Arsenal. At one time the Square was bisected by Lowndes Street and divided into building lots. Houses remained on the King Street side of the square until the latter part of the 19th century. Lowndes Street disappeared, but Tobacco Street, which runs along the south side of the Old Citadel, remains a dedicated public street. According to the lease agreement made with the City of Charleston, the central portion of the square is to be kept open forever as a parade ground for the Sumter Guards and the Washington Light Infantry.

Marion Square also houses several monuments. The most noted is the John C. Calhoun Statue. Calhoun, a native South Carolinian, was an orator, Secretary of War, U.S. Senator, Vice President and staunch defender of slavery. The cornerstone, laid in 1858 before construction was halted by the Civil War, contained a cannon ball used in the Revolutionary War battle of Fort Moultrie, a banner used in Calhoun’s funeral, $100 in Continental money, a lock of Calhoun’s hair, and the last speech he delivered in the U.S. Senate, on March 4, 1850. The original statue was criticized for its poor casting, and replaced in 1896 with the current stone statue with cast-iron palmettos flanking its base. Marion Square also contains a remnant from the 18th century fortifications of the city; and the Bandstand, designed by August Constantine and constructed in 1944.

Lately Marion Square became the site of a new Holocaust Memorial. A master plan has recently been completed for a major relandscaping and renovation project. Marion Square is one of more than 1400 historically significant sites within the Charleston Old and Historic District.

The city’s newest and largest public outdoor tennis facility is South East Park and Tennis Center. The courts are shaded by thousands of trees that blanket the 62-acre park. Also featured are a picnic shelter with restrooms, additional walking trails, a playfield and 14 additional tennis courts.

The park is located approximately two miles east of I-77. Take Garners Ferry Road east past Wal-Mart and turn left at the first flashing traffic signal at Hazelwood. The park will be on the left hand side about a block away.

“Granby Park, near the historic Granby, Whaley and Olympia Mill Villages, opened in 1998. It is the southernmost segment of the Three Rivers Greenway. This 12-mile river park connects the cities of Columbia, West Columbia, and Cayce as well as Richland and Lexington Counties and provides public access to the Congaree, Saluda and Broad Rivers. Granby Park has wonderful views of the river from deeply shaded paths.
Granby Park offers adventure-seekers and nature-lovers accessible river-related recreation and provides significant green infrastructure that enhances private housing options in the downtown area. A dog friendly park with bridges, boardwalks, overlooks, and a half mile of lighted paved paths that accommodate all levels of physical access, including baby strollers and wheelchairs. Granby Park offers one half mile of off path trails for mountain bikes and runners.
Starting from the park building, you can walk either direction on this easy walking paved trail that passes through a very thick and shady wooded area. Helpful signs identify the various trees and other plants (watch out for the ones labeled “Poison Ivy”), and overlooks at either end provide a place to view the Congaree River. Near the south end, you will pass over what was once part of the old Columbia Canal. The trail is lit for evening walks. Bathroom facilities are available at the parking area in the replica saltbox Mill House that echoes the neighborhood architecture from the 1820’s.”

Colonial Dorchester State Historic Site

From 1697 until the beginning of the Revolutionary War, the trading town of Dorchester flourished along the Ashley River, inland from colonial Charleston. Today, Colonial Dorchester State Historic Site’s remarkably preserved archaeological remains give visitors a peek into the early history of colonial South Carolina.

Abandoned at the start of the Revolutionary War, the town of Dorchester has all but disappeared, leaving only a handful of original structures remaining. Visitors can stand below the towering remains of the brick bell tower of St. George’s Anglican Church, catch a glimpse of a log wharf during low tide or view the fort made of an oyster-shell concrete called tabby.

Today, visitors to Colonial Dorchester State Historic Site can watch as archaeologists unearth the settlement’s history. Together with abundant historical records from colonial Charleston, the site is helping to paint a clearer picture of life in colonial South Carolina and the rest of the American South.

Wescott Park

Wescott Park, the Lowcountry’s premier baseball and softball facility, featuring a Ripken Training Facility and batting cages. The park also features 2- playgrounds, 1- enclosed shelter, 1- large outdoor shelter, 2- small outdoor shelters, 1 dog park for small dogs, 1- dog park for large dogs, 1- sand volleyball court and 1- five station adult fitness area. Shelters are available to rent. Wescott Park was meticulously designed and built state of the art for the best experience for players and spectators.

The City’s goal was to create a park capable of holding high level baseball tournaments, while still providing a park setting for the community as a whole. The result is a split park plan that created two distinct areas (sports fields and park) connected by a series of educational nature trails that highlighted the wetlands, native tress and wildlife.

Each of the three ball fields at Wescott Park have been designed differently to scale of Boston Red Sox’s Fenway Park, Atlanta Braves’ Turner Field, and San Francisco Giants’ AT&T Park. Each field is equipped for baseball and softball for athletes 12 years old and under.

A Ripken Training Circle, patented by Cal and Bill Ripken, is incorporated into the facility for instruction and practice of our rising baseball players. The design of the Circle allows for bases and home plates to be substituted for teaching of fundamentals and drills, maximizing the efficiency of instruction. To complete the park as a Ripken Training Facility, batting cages and pitching mounds are incorporated.

Apart from being a sports complex, Wescott Park features passive areas for visitors to enjoy, including a five station adult fitness area, walking trails through the park’s wetlands, and a one enclosed shelter and three air shelters for a variety of community and family events.

Mount Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park

Called the crown jewel of Mount Pleasant, Memorial Waterfront Park offers more than just your average park. Located under the grand entryway to the town, at the base of the Ravenel Bridge, this park has plenty of lawn for enjoying family picnics, a nautical-themed playground modeled after the bridge that provides shade and the boats that pass by in the harbor, and soft-serve ice cream from the River Watch Cafe. The cafe offers beautiful views of Charleston Harbor and a 1,250-foot-long pier where you can sit and swing a while. Memorial Waterfront Park is also home to the Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Pavilion, War Memorial and Visitor Center.

The Pitt Street Bridge, also known as the Cove Inlet Bridge and the Cove Inlet Causeway, was once the sole means of crossing the Charleston harbor from Mount Pleasant to the beach at Sullivan’s Island. Now it stands as a coastal passage for exercise, leisurely strolls and fishing.

The fishing pier at the end of the Pitt Street Bridge is a premier spot to catch everything from blue crabs, flounder, bass, trout and more. What makes this fishing spot so popular is location. Cove Inlet meets the Charleston harbor and makes for a thoroughfare for sea life.

Before the Revolutionary War, a plank bridge built on barrels was constructed across the inlet separating Mount Pleasant from Sullivan’s Island. In 1864 the H.L. Hunley crew crossed the footbridge on the way to Breach Inlet to test dive the submarine. A trolley bridge spanned the cove in 1898 and was replaced by a vehicle bridge in 1927 known as Pitt Street Bridge.

Not only is Pitt Street Bridge open to human residents and visitors but it is also a welcoming place for your furry four-legged friends. Always remember to keep your pets on the leash and clean up after them.
